If you’re going out after washing your hair…
Let hair air dry as much as possible, then apply a root lifting mousse to prep for a blow dry. Dry it by brushing the roots away from the scalp, or turning your head upside down. And don’t forget to use my blow dry trick if you haven’t yet!
Once dry, go easy on the product. Creams and gels will only flatten further and even hairspray can have adverse effects. If you need product, try one with the word “texture” in the name, such as Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, which is like an anytime dry shampoo that holds like hairspray. When styling, gently backcomb the hair – not so much as to create a knotted nightmare but enough to create volume. If your hair is straight and flat, experiment with a styling wand to add a little bounce. Curl hair all around, then lightly brush it out with a comb for instant beach waves. Even if your hair doesn’t fully take to the curls, it will have more body than before.
If you’re going to bed after washing…
This may come as a disappointment to some, but sleeping on wet hair is not the best idea for those with fine or lifeless hair. It’s basically inviting your hair to flatten even further or worse – get stuck in a weird position. Either let hair air dry or blow dry before bed. Then, set the style by sleeping in a super loose bun or rollers, and brush out in the morning. However, don’t over brush! That’s just pulling it down further and stripping it of the texture fine hair needs to appear thicker.
